In summer, we know you are reading things other than our Greater Good newsletters so the newsletter is taking a summer break for the month of July. Don’t fret, we will be back in August to get you ready for the school year and prepare for Fall.
And in case you need inspiration for other summer reads, Community Foundation staff have offered their favorite summer reads (some of which have been re-read year after year, after year, after year…)
Watership Down by Richard Adams (Karl Grimm, Vice President of Finance and Operations)
Daring Greatly by Brene Brown (Nicole LeStrange, Philanthropic Planning Coordinator)
I’m not a fan of self-help books, but picked up “The Gifts of Imperfection” about 3 years ago because it REALLY resonated with me in the moment. Immediately fell in love with Brene Brown, her research on shame, vulnerability and other fun feelings in that arena…and basically everything she says and does. I dropped the ball by not continuing on with her other books, so I’m really looking forward to this one.
Blindness by Jose Saramongo (Kristin Nelson, Senior Philanthropic Advisor)
Nobel Prize for Literature winner explores humanity, community and culture in the face of an unexplained mass epidemic of blindness. There is so much to learn about ourselves in this story.
Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami (Kristin Nelson, Senior Philanthropic Advisor)
I adore Murakami’s work and would pick any (and all) of his books to read or reread in summer (I have one already packed for my vacation.) Norwegian Wood is an excellent introduction to his work and a classic if you have already read some of the others.
A Dog’s Purpose by W. Bruce Cameron (J Mullineaux, Vice President for Philanthropic Planning)
This book will warm your heart while your summer days turn balmy. It is the most beautiful love letter and condolence written to comfort a close companion who was severely grieving the loss of a dog. “Every dog happens for a purpose.”
See you in August!
