Which Scholarships Fit Me?

AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTS (AIA)- REDWOOD EMPIRE SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The AIA Fund provides scholarships for students from Sonoma, Mendocino, Humboldt, DelNorte, Lake, Modoc, Siskiyou and Trinity Counties pursuing post-secondary education in architecture in a degree program accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board, or in a pre-professional four-year undergraduate degree program with a major in architecture. Selection criteria will include academic and non-academic performance, as well as financial need.

L.E. AND EILEEN CASTNER SCHOLARSHIP FUND

L.E. "Bud" and Eileen Castner, well-known and respected residents of Sonoma County since the 1930s, established the Castner Scholarships as a vehicle for their philanthropic work. The Castners' legacy supports high school students of Sonoma County in the pursuit of a college education. Continuing in the Castners. support of the Hanna Boys Center in Sonoma, California, students of the Center are encouraged to apply.

JAY DEATON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

This scholarship fund was created by an association of Jay Deaton's friends who want to remember him by perpetuating his love of agriculture. Scholarships will be awarded to residents of Sonoma or Marin counties majoring in agriculture at a two- or four-year accredited college.

FLORA DE MAYO SCHOLARSHIP FUND

This fund was established to provide scholarships to students wishing to pursue post-secondary studies in the arts who have demonstrated both passion and aptitude in their field. Preference will be given to students who have also shown a commitment to their community. Submit:
  • A one-two page personal statement including information related to your work in the arts. In addition, at least one recommendation from a teacher specifically addressing the applicant's passion and aptitude for the arts is required.


CHARLES DEMEO SCHOLARSHIP FUND

This fund was established to fulfill Charles DeMeo's wish to provide support for the education of single mothers who may be in danger of becoming homeless. Scholarships will be awarded to single mothers currently participating in an organized program of supportive/transitional housing services. A separate application is required for this scholarship. Contact Community Foundation for details.

THE DRY CREEK VALLEY SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The fund was established by the Dry Creek Valley Association in cooperation with the Winegrowers of Dry Creek Valley. It provides scholarships to residents and children of residents of the Dry Creek Valley Watershed of Sonoma County with financial need who have demonstrated academic merit and involvement in community and extracurricular activities. Please include one letter of recommendation and a one page biography paper introducing yourself, highlighting your accomplishments, involvements, aspirations. HISPANIC CHAMBER OF COMMERCE OF SONOMA COUNTY SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The fund provides scholarships to Sonoma County students of Hispanic descent. Scholarships will be awarded to residents with financial need who have demonstrated leadership and volunteer involvement in community or school affairs. Submit:
  • A one- to two-page typed essay describing family back ground, personal accomplishments and challenges, career goals, demonstrated leadership and your anticipated relationship with the Hispanic community.
MARSHA & DONALD JACOBS FAMILY FUND

Marsha and Donald Jacobs and their children have established this fund to provide scholarships to deserving students in Sonoma County. Preference will be given to re-entry students pursuing a four-year degree in health sciences, including psychology.

HELEN KELLUM SCHOLARSHIP FUND

This scholarship fund provides scholarships to Sonoma County residents with academic ability, realistic goals and financial need.

LA TORTILLA FACTORY JOSE & MARY TAMAYO MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

This scholarship was established to support deserving students who are pursuing post-secondary education, including two or four-year college or vocational school. Scholarships will be awarded based on academic performance and community or employment experience, as well as financial need. In addition, preference will be given to the children of employees of La Tortilla Factory and to Latino students graduating from Sonoma County High Schools. Submit:
  • A personal statement of no more than two pages describing your background, accomplishments, goals and objectives, as well as any other factors you consider relevant.
MY FUTURE IS IN HEALTHCARE SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The fund assists students who are residents of Sonoma County to pursue post-secondary education/training for a career in the health professions. Eligible students must be enrolled at a Sonoma County educational institution, either vocational school or college carrying 6 units minimum. To qualify, students must demonstrate financial need and academic competence (minimum GPA of 2.5). Preference will be given to low-income, bicultural students with a demonstrated interest in the health field, either through volunteer or work experience. Graduating high school seniors, as well as returning college students are eligible for consideration. Submit:
  • In your personal statement please be sure to explain why you are interested in a career in the health field and describe your plan to achieve that goal.
MICHAEL F. O'DONNELL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

This fund was established to honor the memory of Michael F. O'Donnell who was recognized as a brilliant litigator distinguished by the qualities of supreme decency, honesty, humility and humanity. This fund will award scholarships to students currently enrolled in law school or pursuing a law-related career.

THE OHLSON FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The fund is established to provide scholarships for students who are residents of Sonoma County to pursue post-secondary education with the goal of pursuing a career in teaching. Students must demonstrate financial need and prior academic success. Preference will be given to individuals who have overcome adversity in their life to pursue their objectives. Submit:
  • In your personal statement, please address the reason for your interest in a teaching career.
100 BLACK MEN OF SONOMA COUNTY SCHOLARSHIP FUND

100 Black Men of Sonoma County provides scholarships to deserving Sonoma County residents of African American descent. Scholarships will be awarded to students with financial need who are pursuing an education at a college, university or trade/technical school.

THE PEANUTS ON PARADE SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The Peanuts on Parade Scholarship Fund assists students who are current or former residents of Sonoma County pursuing a course of study in cartooning and/or animation. Students studying graphic design may also qualify if they are interested in branching out to cartooning. Preference will be given to students with some professional experience and to those accepted to or attending the San Francisco Art Institute, Academy of Art University, San Francisco, California College of the Arts, or The Center for Cartoon Study, Vermont. Other art institutions will be considered on request. Submit:
  • One to two pieces as tangible evidence of your work, size 8 1/2 by 11. Students called for an interview will be required to bring a portfolio of their work.
REDWOOD EMPIRE ESTATE PLANNING COUNCIL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The Redwood Empire Estate Planning Council established this fund to provide scholarships for students planning to pursue careers in business, law or accounting with the hope they may choose to become estate planners.

SANDS FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE
SCHOLARSHIP FUND

In response to concerns of increasing environmental, economic and societal degradation, the Sands for a Sustainable Future Scholarship Fund is offering assistance to students pursuing post-secondary education/training in ANY FIELD OF STUDY which will help insure that resources available to society today will be available tomorrow. Submit:
  • In addition to two letters of recommendation, applicant must submit an essay of less than two pages which:
    • identifies a fragile or dwindling resource,
    • describes a problem (economic, environmental or cultural) created by the weakness or disappearance of this resource, and
    • articulates strategic and realistic steps toward sustaining or renewing that resource. This essay should demonstrate a passion and commitment toward developing a career that has the capacity to improve existing conditions, as well as create a lasting and sustainable legacy for future generations.
SONOMA COUNTY MEDICAL ASSOCIATION AND ALLIANCE ~
HEALTH CAREERS SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The fund was established to provide scholarships for graduating high school students who plan to enter, or students currently enrolled in a course of study preparatory for a career in medicine, nursing or an allied health field (Occupational Therapy, Pharmacist, Physical Therapy, or Radiology Tech). Special consideration will be given to qualified students who have been in foster care. Applicants must demonstrate outstanding academic achievement with a 3.5 g.p.a. or higher. Applicants currently enrolled in a program of study must provide evidence of Sonoma County residency, enrollment in a Sonoma County school or graduation from a Sonoma County high school. Submit:
  • A one-page essay describing why you plan to follow a career in medicine, nursing or an allied health field and the steps you have taken to achieve this goal;
  • Two letters of recommendation from instructors or close associates, excluding relatives.
SOROPTIMIST INTERNATIONAL OF HEALDSBURG SCHOLARSHIP FUND

This fund was established to provide scholarships for post-secondary education for students who are graduating in good standing from any accredited high school in Healdsburg or Geyserville. Applications will be reviewed for financial need, academic and non-academic factors, including family and community service and demonstrated personal character. Applicants are urged to include any other factors they consider significant in their application. Particular consideration will be given to applicants who are the first in their family to go to college. Submit:
  • In your personal statement please be sure to describe your family background, personal accomplishments and demonstrated leadership.
THE ROBERT BERTRAND STUDNICK MEMORIAL FUND

This fund was established to provide scholarships to deserving graduates of Santa Rosa High School who will be attending any campus within the University of California system. Applicants will be evaluated on grades, extracurricular activities, and overall high school performance.

RICHARD T. TORKELSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND FOR JOURNALISM

Established in memory of Richard T. Torkelson, a Press Democrat reporter, this fund provides scholarships to students residing in Sonoma, Lake or Mendocino counties who are pursuing the study of journalism or communications. Submit:
  • Two letters of recommendation from instructors or close associates (excluding relatives)
  • A 100-word essay on why you have chosen a career in journalism or communications
  • A sample of your best writing for print or broadcast.
CARLISLE VAN ORNUM VOCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND ~ CLOVERDALE

This fund was established to assist Cloverdale High School graduating seniors who are interested in pursuing vocational degrees in business, trades or health-related fields from accredited vocational and business school, or any California Junior or State college. Applicants will be evaluated based on financial need, grades, community and school activities, leadership skills and vocational promise.

CARLISLE VAN ORNUM /H.E.L.P. SCHOLARSHIP FUND ~ HEALDSBURG

This fund benefits Healdsburg High School graduating seniors who are interested in pursuing vocational degrees in business, trade or health-related fields from accredited vocational and business school, or any California Junior or State College. Applicants' eligibility will be determined by financial need, grades, community and school activities, leadership skills and vocational promise.

ANDREA VICINI MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Andrea Vicini had a high regard for the value of education and a particular love for the Italian language. This scholarship is granted in memory of Mr. Vicini and preference will be given to students of Italian descent.

ANDY WALLSTRUM MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

With this fund, the life work of Andy Wallstrum is honored by providing scholarships to students who are graduates of Lawrence Cook Middle School in Santa Rosa. Preference will be given to students who have demonstrated improvement in their academic grades or behavior. Submit:
  • One letter of recommendation from an instructor or principal verifying improvement in your academic grades or behavior.
THE BEVERLY C. WILSON SCHOLARSHIP FUND FOR WOMEN IN BUSINESS

Ms. Wilson established this fund to provide support and opportunity to future generations of women willing to strive for the top, maintain a platform for their goals, support their community and demonstrate excellence in their everyday approach to life. The scholarship is available for study at a four-year college, open to women students, graduating from any accredited Petaluma high school, with a minimum overall g.p.a. of 3.0. Eligible applicants will show a well-balanced history of extra curricular activities and community service, a motivated work ethic, leadership abilities, as well as the ability to work effectively in teams.

GERTRUDE YOUNG MEMORIAL HORTICULTURAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The family of Gertrude Young created this fund in her honor to provide scholarships and/or educational activities for Sonoma County residents interested in the field of horticulture.
