Pop-Up Philanthropy

A recent Chronicle of Philanthropy article illustrates how business leaders were moved by the opportunity to educate American youth about one of the greatest contributions to the civil rights movement through the Oscar nominated movie, “Selma”. Donors raced to contribute to “pop-up” projects in nonprofits, school districts, and independent organizations across the country that could connect youth to movie screenings. The speed and commitment of donors’ responses provided a great opportunity to create new tools and mechanisms for spontaneous philanthropy, in addition to creating a dialogue about the American Civil Rights Movement. A recent article on The Chronicle of Philanthropy website discussed how business leader are coming together to ensure that school kids are able to see the movie for free.
