Mental Health Awareness Month

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, one out of five Americans experience a mental health condition. Serious mental illness costs America $193.2 billion in lost earning annually. Nearly 26% of homeless adults staying in shelters live with a serious mental illness and 24% of incarcerated adults have a “recent history of a mental health condition”.

Disturbingly, only 60% of adults with a serious mental illness received mental health services in the previous years. May’s Mental Health Awareness Month aims to fight the stigma associated with mental illness and increase access to treatment.

In this newsletter, Community Foundation Sonoma County honors the donors who support mental health services and awareness projects, the trained mental health professionals, and the individuals who cope with these conditions every day.
