2005 Donor-Advised and Designated Fund Grants

Donor and committee advised funds allow individual donors or organizations to establish a fund for charitable giving, make contributions to it at any time and advise the Community Foundation on grants to be made from the fund. In 2005, grants from advised funds totaled more than $5.7 million. All grants are approved or designated for approval by the Community Foundation's Board of Directors.

Advised funds support the community in a variety of ways, from grants to programs and projects to grants for general operating funds, often the most difficult type of funding for nonprofits to raise.

Designated funds are established by individual donors or nonprofit organizations that designate specific organizations as recipients. In 2005, grants totaling more than $1.7 million were made. Of that amount, $800,000 was distributed to the Charles M. Schulz Museum and Research Center which opened in the summer of 2002.

In addition to having full access to the Community Foundation's program, donor services, investment and management expertise, donor-advisors also receive opportunities to participate in site visits and educational events.

Individual Donor-Advised Grants:

Individual Donor-Advised Fund Grants are made from funds established at the Community Foundation by individual donors who wish to advise about grantmaking. In 2005 these grants totaled $5,720,425.

INITIATIVE GRANTS provide a way for the Community Foundation to bring additional financial support to Sonoma County nonprofit organizations that would not otherwise be available. Initiatives often result from the Community Foundation being contacted by a private foundation that is interested in partnering with us in order to gain access to our knowledge of the community's needs and assets.

Communities Advancing the Arts: Community Foundation Sonoma County is one of eight California community foundations selected by the James Irvine Foundation to participate in this three-year initiative designed to increase donor support for local arts organizations. The Irvine grant is for $400,000 over three years. At least 40 percent of the grant will be used to support awards to individual artists.
