Developing a Community Foundation Affiliate: A Case Study
Comparing Efforts in Three Regions of Sonoma County: Healdsburg, West County and Petaluma
Published: April 2006
In 2002, Community Foundation Sonoma County began an outreach effort with the goal of establishing one or more affiliates. These efforts were focused on Healdsburg, Petaluma, and West County. Supported by The James Irvine Foundation, this case study documents these efforts in the hope that those interested in starting affiliates might benefit from the strategies and processes described. What occurred in each area is discussed, including a comparison of each community.s philanthropic endeavors and idiosyncrasies. The report offers an analysis of what worked and what didn.t. Critical Success Factors are identified that facilitated the establishment of a significant community endowment in Healdsburg. The document contains numerous appendices, including direct links to source materials and other resources.

Santa Rosa Museums: Future Opportunities
Published: December 2005
This report was commissioned by Community Foundation to help explore community perceptions, hopes and needs regarding the future of the Sonoma County Museum. This study was made particularly timely given the Museum.s merger with the Museum of Contemporary Art at the Luther Burbank Center for the Arts in December 2005. The report addresses the following areas: Mission and Vision, Building Institutional Leadership, Downtown Revitalization, Exploring Multiple Funding Strategies, and Building Community Partnerships. Based on interviews with more than 50 individuals and an assessment of best practices of museums throughout the country, the author (an independent consultant with national experience in the community museum field) concludes that for the museum to be fully successful a number of significant changes should be made in both the short and long term. These include gaining greater clarity about the institution.s mission and vision, strengthening its leadership, increasing financial support and building stronger community partnerships.
